About Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is caused when plaque-eating bacteria infect the mouth and jawbone. People with chronic periodontal diseases have a higher chance of inflammation and bacterial infections, which can lead to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other health concerns.

Symptoms of gum disease may be hard to detect by the naked eye, due to its gradual progression. Often, patients are not aware of the increased severity until they experience pain. It is important to receive regular checkups with your dentist to avoid the risk of periodontitis becoming more severe, as this has serious implications for your overall health. If left without treatment, periodontitis can cause damage to the teeth and jaw that may result in tooth and bone loss as well.
